Off-the-shelf or custom? Here's how to decide.

Most trades should start with an app. Some reach the point where custom software pays for itself.

What's the difference?

An off-the-shelf app is ready to use today and is shared by thousands of businesses, so it fits the common way of working. Custom software is designed around one business's process. It takes longer and costs more upfront, but it can remove work that no standard app can.

A simple test

Write down the tasks your team repeats every week that an app can't handle. Estimate the hours. If those hours cost more over a year than a custom build, or they're costing you jobs, custom is worth a conversation. If not, an app with good setup is the smarter choice.

Common questions

Is custom software worth it for a small trade business?

Usually not for the basics. Quoting, scheduling and invoicing are well served by off-the-shelf apps. Custom software is worth it when a specific process, such as complex pricing, client portals or compliance reporting, costs you real hours or lost jobs every week.

Can I start off-the-shelf and add custom later?

Yes, and it's often the best path. Start on the Getinto app, and if you hit a limit we build the custom part on the same platform, so there's no migration.
